Hydraulic Cylinders
Afkos Industries Hydraulic Cylinders are of the threaded cylinder head and variable rod end and end cap design. Allowing for a number of different mounting styles from clevis to spherical bearing mount. These hydraulic cylinders are available in a number of bore diameters from 2.5″ to 7.0″ (6.35 to 177.8mm) to suit your thrust and stroke requirements.
Our technical staff are more than capable to design and manufacture any hydraulc cylinder outside our AM25 range, from 1½” (38mm) to 36″ (900mm) bore size and up to a maximum stroke of 6000mm.
Standard Features
The rod and wiper seals can be removed as a unit, with the head sealing O rings, simply by removing the head with the milled “C” spanner slots.
The piston is fitted with two “self energising” single acting seals, of the highest quality nitrile polyurethane elastomers. This results in positive sealing between the piston and cylinder wall with minimal frictional losses. The rod seal is of similar construction and, all in all, this reduces friction, thus the overall efficiency of the AM25 range of hydraulic cylinders is greatly enhanced, when compared with conventional sealing.
The rod wiper is a Polyurethane, metal cased design seal which provides excellent protection from environmental contamination. Therefore, ensuring the final link to a well engineered hydraulic cylinder, which is designed to achieve unmatched performance and reliability.
Fully welded end cap and heavy wall ports ensure positive leak-free operation under the most demanding conditions. All hydraulic cylinders are also bench tested above their normal operating pressures prior to despatch.
The Afkos Industries AM25 hydraulic cylinders have proved themselves superior and, consistently reliable time and time again, even in the most demanding conditions throughout Australia.
Rated for a maximum working pressure of 17.3 MPa (2500 psi 173 bar) and with a factor of safety of 4, Afkos Industries AM25 hydraulic cylinders can be designed for operating at pressures up to 70 MPa (10 000 psi, 700 bar) on application.
As a result of these features, and our many years of experience in both hydraulic cylinder design and manufacture, Afkos Industries has established itself as one of the largest off-the-shelf and custom made cylinder manufacturers in Western Australia.
Materials and Construction
Honed barrel of heavy wall seamless steel tube with fully welded end cap which forms the base of the cylinder (cap end). Heavy wall U.N. O-ring ports are welded to the barrel.
Cylinder head, precision machined from high strength nodular cast iron. This design allows low frictional resistance, combined with increased bearing area support. This design also allows for easy maintenance of the seals in the field or in the workshop with the use of “C” spanner slots.
The piston rod is made from medium carbon steel, hard chromed and ground for a very durable and lasting sliding surface. Stainless steel rods are available on request, recommended where hydraulic cylinders are exposed to the weather or corrosive environments.
High grade cast iron (or phosphor bronze) piston fitted with two single acting seals, held in place on the piston rod with a high tensile nut.
Self energised seals of durable and high quality nitrile polyurethane elastomers.
Cylinder Cushioning
The term “cushioning” refers to optional cylinder arrangements that is often installed at either or both ends of a cylinder that decreases the piston rod’s velocity. As the piston nears the cushioned end oil flow is progressively restricted through an adjustable metering orifice, preventing the piston from “hammering” the end caps. By slowing the rod’s velocity cylinder cushioning is only effective as the piston approaches either the fully open or fully closed positions. If velocity conrol is required for intermediate positions, this must be accomplished externally by suitable system design. Cushioning is designed to properly cushion the cylinder and is not intended to cushion large inertia loads.
Hydraulic Cylinder Selection
The selection of a hydraulic cylinder requires consideration of load, speed, system pressure, shock loading, type of cylinder and rod mounting styles, mounting attitude and how the load in motion will be stopped.
Select cylinder directly from the Specification Tables only when the following design criteria are not exceeded.
PRESSURE – 10.35 MPa (103 bar or 1500 PSI)
VELOCITY – 0.15 metres per second (30 ft/min.)
STROKE – 10 times rod diameter
When the pressure-volicity-stroke envelope is outside the criteria, special consideration must be given to thrust applications and dynamic forces due to external loading and circuit function must be taken into account – In which case please do not hesitate to consult Afkos Industries for additional help or information when making hydraulic cylinder selections.
